Brilliant swirls of ceramic and floral shapes are reflected in the ‘Foliage Series’ in the recent collection of Bandung-based jewelry maker, KAR Jewelry. The new luxury ornaments are new in the market, with details of sprightly craftmanships that are designed by two young designers, KaniaDiedraIsmi and Tania AndinaKardin.

Crafting since 2013, KAR Jewelry launched their first collection and immediately began gaining recognition. The two masterminds behind KAR are ceramic craft graduates of Bandung Insititute of Technology (ITB), Kania Diedra Ismi and Tania Andina Kardin who decided to delve into ceramic jewelry business.
The Foliage Series is KAR’s attempt to explore the limitless possibilities of materials, using ceramic liquid gold substance. Ismi explained that the series are rich with swirls and folds–far from the common perception of ceramic products.
“We know that ceramic is identical with its rigid image. We, however, stretch the possibilities of the materials usage,” Ismi said.
Ceramic is an uncommon material for jewelry as it is often used for building materials or dining utensils. Ismi and Kardin’s first gained their reputation when their experiment won the International Craft Council Award and exhibited in the International Textile and Costume Congress in South Korea, Jakarta Fashion Week, andIndonesia Fashion Week.
Ismi believes that it is important togive a personal touch in every pieceof jewelry. The brand is dedicated tokeeping their production handmadeand continue to test different forms,designs and materials.
“In the creative process, we do everything together. It usually starts with brain-storming ideas, sketches, prototyping, and ceramic production.”All the processes are usually done in their studio in Cihampelas, Bandung.
In the Foliage Series, the glazed gold liquid is applied to fired ceramics before the last firing process, giving them their exquisite appearance.
“The ceramic liquid gold is usually11k gold, but it also depends on the makers preference.” Ismi said that KARJewelry aims to translate the organic and natural forms of floras to reach subtlety—to illustrate how laidback luxury should be.
