Indonesia Design’s Soiree in Surabaya

Indonesia Design marked the launch of its special edition focus on Surabaya with a gala soiree at the Royal Ballroom of the JW Marriott Surabaya on 19 December 2016 with a host of the city’s designers and developers, fashionistas and socialites in the house.

Lina Gan, iD’s publisher and editor-in-chief, clad in a stunning dress crafted by Diana Putri Couture, was on hand to welcome revellers. On offer for a cocktail hour were wines from the acclaimed Australian vintner Penfolds, presented by Treasury Wine Estates, along with delectables supplied by the de Soematra Function House with local traits in canapés setting specially crafted by JW Marriott Surabaya Executive Chef Andri Aryono.

As the crowd swelled into the ballroom for the festivities, VVIP guests enjoyed the events from sofas and plush chairs from the exquisite collection of Innovation Indonesia, Thema Home and Toscana Home Furniture Indonesia and curated by the renowned local designer Hidayat Endramukti.

Lina began the evening by thanking those assembled to mark the magazine’s launch, and spoke about the how the transformations of Surabaya, where she spent 15 years, prompted her to create special focus edition on the city.

The pianist Nitya Primantari then ascended to the stage, serenely illuminated by the spotlights. On the grand piano kindly supplied by PianoForte, Nitya gave a rendition of “Jeux d’eau”, which translates as “Fountains” or “Playing Water”, by Ravel, that moved the crowd.

Next was a trunk show presenting two collections devised by Era Soekamto from the Iwan Tirta Private Collection. Serving as muses were a dozen of Surabaya’s most prominent and talented architects and socialites. Ascending the runway were Angela Tedja, Budi Kurniawan, Donny Hartanto, Erwin Hawawinata, Frans Sinarta, Kezia Karin, Liza Spencer, Rudy Hendarta, Seno Suhargo, Stefanus Irwan, Sutoto Yakobus and Yohannes Mochtar.

On the catwalk, the muses sported pieces from the Swatantra collection, which preserves the ancient nitik pattern preserved by Iwan Tirta himself. The men’s jackets, shirts and sarongs sported nitik’s distinct geometric pattern as well as shades of white sogan. Meanwhile, the women wore detailed ink prada on cocktail dresses, blouses and sarongs.

Nitya returned to the stage, joined by the soprano Evelyn Merrelita, as the pair presented moving rendition of the aria “Jeux de Vivre” from the opera Romeo and Juliet by Gounod.

The evening was capped by a show-stopping fashion show presenting GENESIS, the latest collection from Diana Putri Couture. The designs of the Surabaya-born Diana, who was named best designer at Couture Fashion Week in New York City in 2015, have graced Hollywood celebrities such as Nikki Bella and the singer Carrie Underwood.

Taking inspiration from the Biblical account of creation, GENESIS presented looks that embodied in fashion the glory of creation, the savagery of God’s creatures and the fury of the fall of man.

Reinhardt Kenneth created and directed an explosive and heart-fashion show that captured the energy of GENESIS.

Sys Semiadji produced the cheoroegraphy and the production was aided by Dekafe Shoes, Leciel Design (hair accessories and headpieces), Cherry Jessica (make-up), Nefertiti Paris (hair) with Hirna Kumala (styling), Laurentia Editha and Tomoki Moyoshi (musical composition) with Mandy Kowara (consulting) and Infinity Decoration (fresh flowers).

Hair styling and make-up for the iD team was done by the Tristan’s team from The Parlour Hairdressing.
