We often see how a person’s outward identity can be manipulated, maybe subconsciously, to serve some temporary purpose but, at the same time, for someone to truly establish themselves in their chosen vocation, they need a solid understanding of their inner identity. When artist Abdul Djalil Pirous reached the age of 40, he felt he had come to an important moment in determining the path he would take for his life and his career. To search for answers regarding his personal identity he took a journey all the way from New York back to his hometown of Aceh. Anton Adianto from Indonesia Design talks to him and gets numerous philosophical insights and explanations from the man who was born on 11 March 1932 and who is regarded as the pioneer of Islamic calligraphy as an art form as well as one of the most important figures in the Indonesian contemporary art scene.
