In The Name of Art

Renowned painter Nyoman Masriadi, born in Bali and educated in Yogyakarta, continuously impresses art enthusiasts with his visual vocabulary and artistry. The down-to-earth painter is arguably the most established in Southeast Asia; he’s the first living artist in the region to have his work auctioned for more than $1 million. When he’s not engulfed in a canvas, he runs the Masriadi art foundation (MAF) that recently pened its doors in June 2015. In line with the lack of art spaces in Yogyakarta, Masriadi founded the eponymous non-profit organization to support budding local visual artists under the age of 30 and harness their potential. Besides displaying intriguing paintings by young talents, MAF also sells one-of-a-kind souvenirs, from T-shirts, stationeries to ashtrays. When in Yogya, be sure to check out the contemporary art space to get a feel of the local art scene and perhaps even spot the next Masriadi.
