5 Cool Things: New in Design

Explore Indonesia Design's top picks of the latest releases in the world of design this week, from the cool, luxurious private jets to exquisite new hotels.

Arlo NoMad Hotel NYC

Arlo Hotels is known for its efficient use of space. In New York, the brand recently opened Arlo NoMad, a 250-room hotel, all designed with a mid-century aesthetic. The work is a collaboration between the hotel’s management and design studio Avroko and presents what today’s traveller needs: From a compact room, to free Wi-Fi, to a 42-inch TV to a rainforest shower. Arlo NoMad is also equipped with a cool Italian-inspired restaurant, a library area for co-working, a rooftop cocktail bar, and an in-house bodega that’s open 24/7.

Mercedes-Benz’s arm The Maybach has teamed up with Lufthansa Technik to release a luxurious private jet. The design resembles a luxurious apartment rather than a plane, and includes a lounge space, a chef’s kitchen area, a dining room, an entertainment zone, a chill-out area and a bedroom. The plan is to release this uber-chic flying apartment during the Monaco’s yacht show in September.

Welcome the latest Hublot Big Bang UNICO GMT. Designed with a dapper look for the sophisticated nomad, the watch allows the wearer to instantly swap the local time with a simple push button while also reading the home time. Although the watch inherits the early rectangular shape of Hublot’s Big Bang watches, the new ones have an open-worked dial that displays two time zones in the same space simultaneously. Hublot Big Bang UNICO GMT is available in two versions: A titanium case is priced at US$19,900 and one with a carbon-fibre case priced at $23,100.

Lamino Chair Revamp

A new look for a classic icon.
A new look for a classic icon.

Remember the classic Lamino Chair by Yngve Ekström from 1956? This curvy bent chair just had a recent revamp from Amsterdam-based Finnish designer Kustaa Saksi. The Finn is known for his psychedelic style. This time, he took the Nordic forest as his main inspiration with moss, bark, and lichen that creates a composition of soft and tactile. This natural-looking chair has attracted some serious designers from Salvatorre Ferragamo, Nike to Marimekko. This icon is worth checking out, as its predecessor was deemed the best Swedish furniture design of the 20th century by the interior magazine Sköna Hem in 1999. Available in five colorways, check out the collection here.

Ex-Opium Factory Turned into “Whimsical” Space

A whimsical take on adaptive reuse.
A whimsical take on adaptive reuse.

Shanghai studio Linehouse just designed a co-working space for WeWork Weihai in Shanghai. The former opium factory was transformed into a whimsical Wes Anderson-style space in celebrating the grandeur of the building. Visitors will experience the whimsical theme through its ivy-green steel structure and staircase and prism-shaped flats of oak wood that connect the three levels . The studio overhauled a 20th-century building in crafting this hotel-like space that references its history as a store for opium when making it into an artist’s residence. Now, the space hosts more than 1,300 members of WeWork, a co-working company that offers rented desk spaces and shared amenities.
