For the last decade, pretty handbags and clutches of Sabbatha have been worn by fashion-forward individuals in Indonesia and abroad. The talented artist behind the label, Sabbatha Rahzuardi has recently ventured out and started to experiment with 3D forms: origami.
As a kid who was noted for his exceptional artistic skills, Sabbatha has been passionate about design since his earlier years. He took the chance to study architecture and interior design in one of world’s greatest cities for art and fashion, Paris, only to discover that he was more drawn to designing handbags and clutches. When not sketching more ethnically inspired bags, Sabbatha spends his time in his well-lit studio crafting pop-up origami works.
For most of us, our first encounter with the Japanese art of paper folding was during our childhood. We learned the intricate art medium at a young age, only to underestimate its potential as we grow older. Seeing Sabbatha’s colourful artwork for the first time takes us back to those early days, but with a heightened sense of appreciation. Not to mention origami has received nods of approval in all corners of the world
The origami paper is folded to make certain forms like the ubiquitous cranes, fans and waterlilies. Sabbatha then unfolds each one and draws patterns on it before refolding and arranging it into a cohesive board of artwork.
Sabbatha’s works are inspired by the beautiful landscape of Indonesia. His pieces like “The Majestic Indonesian Forest”, “The Haven under Indonesian Water”, and the most recent “ Decadent lake of Indonesia” are testaments of this.
