Despite being surrounded by the trappings of modern living, many people in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) in the eastern part of Indonesia still choose to live in traditional houses known as rumah adat. Some of the rumah adat are maintained in order to satisfy the tourist industry while others are inhibited for purely cultural reasons. The house is not just a place to live, it is also a “social institution”, a place where clan members pay respect to their ancestors and follow a certain way of life.
