BACKGROUND. Doddy Tjahjadi is at the helm of the management and operations of PTI Architects, with a focus on project feasibility and commercial viability. With a strong business acumen, the University of New South Wales graduate has secured the company’s position among the top 10 architecture firms in Indonesia since 2005 and counting.

What is ‘luxury’ for you?

Luxury is a word which represents something very good, exclusive, comfortable, and also original and timeless in terms of appearance and idea. I see that the current notion of luxury in architecture is beyond comfort and elegance. It involves sustainability and healthy living.

In your view, what does luxury industry has to offer today?

Luxury buyers are looking for a place to live that are not only high quality and comfortable, but also secured, peaceful and healthy with a lot of open space. One example is an energy efficient home that boasts environmentally conscious construction and amenities. The demand of sustainable approach has also placed greater emphasis on knowing where and how products are made.

We can find many different luxury destinations in Indonesia, from modern houses in big cities like Jakarta to dutch colonial houses in Bandung and Malang; from luxury city hotels in Jakarta to luxury resort hotels in Bali; and from the height of Mount Bromo to the deep diving spot of Raja Ampat in West Papua.

How do you see the outlook of the luxury segment in Indonesia?

The luxury segment is growing bigger and in a faster pace. As the country’s societies are more informed, more educated and more affluent, they will spend more on lifestyle products and services

What is your opinion on the public transportation development, particularly the on-going MRT and LRT projects?

Within the scope of public transportation development, MRT and LRT reduce the distance and the time taken from the suburban to the CBD. It will expand the border of traditional luxury residential areas of Menteng and Kebayoran to the perimeter of Jakarta along the MRT and LRT lines. Tell us about the projects you have done that will contribute to Indonesian luxury sector.

Banyan Tree Ungasan Bali that boasts generous size, comfortable spaces and functional design of its villas. Next is Swissbel-hotel Yogyakarta. This project features successful integration of artworks and the celebration of the city’s art deco heritage within its architecture and interior design. Last but not the least is Hufaven Fushi Maldives for its experiential luxury of living over the sea and for its privacy and exclusion.
